Hopefully a simple problem. I'm using GAP elements in Nastran and have started with a simple example to check that they do indeed work.
The example i'm using - a beam with a cutout along the centre. GAP elements connect opposing nodes inside this gap. A force is applied to one side of the beam, which bends the material and closes the gap. The GAP elements reach their minimum length and the defined closed stiffness is activated. The problem is that I expected these elements to become rigid with the closed stiffness, and then transfer the load from the one node of the GAP element to the other. i.e. The force on the top closes the gap, but the bottom half of the beam acts as if it is fixed in all DOFs (SPC123456) I can't get the gap to close, then continue pushing and displacing the lower half of the beam.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Hope the above makes sense, here's a pic
